What’s that? Another acne? Oh not again! Okay, let’s step back from the mirror a little bit and take a few deep breaths. Better now 😉? If you have been wearing a mask a lot more frequently than you probably ever have, we know exactly the causes of those annoying zits that are appearing on your face and we have our tried and tested solutions to it!
With the current global situation, it is hard not to see the frequency of mask wearing increasing greatly as they have inevitably become part of our ‘new normal’ lifestyle. However, prolonged mask wearing is probably not something that our skin loves the most as it often gets stressed from friction, lack of airflow, pore-clogging impurities that build up on the masks and so on which causes what is termed ‘Maskne’ or Mask Acne, as well as conditions like contact dermatitis and irritation.
But who are affected or more susceptible to mask-induced skin concerns? Maskne and other skin conditions can affect anyone regardless of skin type. This is because when we wear masks, there is an increase in temperature and moisture which makes the skin more oily, sensitized and prone to get irritated which is why selecting masks with breathable material is very important. It would also be ideal to wear a fresh, clean mask whenever possible to prevent build up of impurities which can clog pores or irritate the skin further; or if you wear a reusable one, be sure to wash it thoroughly on a daily basis. While it is highly recommended that you wear a mask, it doesn’t mean that your skin needs to breakout from it! Here is a simple, step by step skincare routine that we have tried and tested to prevent mask-induced skin troubles, along with skin-saving ingredients that you should look for.
Always Start with a Good Cleansing Routine
Begin your skincare with a low-irritant, gentle cleanser that suits your skin type. If you have combination or oily skin, find something that contains gentle exfoliants such as AHA or BHA. which helps eliminate excess sebum, clear out pores, dissolve dead skin and gives the skin a clearer, smooth complexion. Avoid harsh cleansers especially those that have rough, abrasive texture which further stresses out the skin, and opt for gentle cleansers that contain some exfoliants to help purify the skin. You can opt for cleansers suitable to your skin type that have soft, foamy texture which glides on the skin easily to prevent tugging. We recommend trying MAKE P:REM Solution Me. Mild Bubble Foam which is a gentle, clarifying bubble cleanser that effectively removes impurities with its low irritant formula. Find out more about the product by clicking on the link or picture.
Pick a Hydrating, Repairing Toner
After cleansing, apply a hydrating and repairing toner to replenish the skin's hydration. Opt for a toner that is enriched with Snail Mucin, an ingredient known for its skin strengthening and repairing benefits that help rebuild and soothe damaged, irritated skin. When your skin barrier is strong, the likelihood of it getting irritated is reduced, improves hydration levels and leaves the skin with silky-smooth texture. Weak barrier causes our skin to appear dry and blotchy, feel itchy, dehydrated and inflamed; this can be seen when the skin becomes red, start breaking out, cracking and eventually lead to more serious skin condition such as dermatitis. That’s why, ensuring that you use the right skincare products to eliminate stress from your skin is especially important. SOME BY MI Snail Truecica Miracle Repair Toner is a lightweight, hydrating toner that leaves your skin feeling refreshed, soothed and smooth to prepare it for remaining skincare steps.

Wake Up and Makeup for Yourself!
Can I still wear makeup underneath my mask? Yes you can, but here’s the catch, be cautious with heavy foundations that can clog pores. Instead, stick to non-comedogenic, lightweight makeup that provide your skin with adequate coverage. After applying makeup, you can gently blot your skin to ensure that the makeup won’t rub off on your mask and finish with setting spray or powder of your choice. When removing makeup at the end of the day, it is recommended to do a double cleanse with an oil-based cleanser and foaming cleanser to remove all traces of impurities.
THE FACE SHOP Dr. Belmeur Advanced Cica Cushion offers light-medium coverage, yet effective enough to cover redness and blemishes. It contains centella asiatica to keep the skin soothed and it has a non-comedogenic formula which makes it ideal for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin.
- It is important to keep your skin well moisturized before, during and after wearing masks and other personal protective equipment to minimize friction on the skin. Select masks that fit your face perfectly, tight ones will trap impurities and sweat which will clog pores, while large ones will rub against your skin and cause discomfort. Avoid masks that are rough to the touch, as this will cause abrasions and in some cases, scarring.
- If you have oily, acne-prone skin, the key to addressing acne is to apply spot treatment to reduce inflammation and redness. It will also help eliminate bacteria and excess sebum which may worsen the skin condition.
- For those with dry, sensitive skin, it is recommended to remove masks as soon as you have reached home and thoroughly cleanse your face with a moisturizing cleanser (double cleanse if you wear makeup), and then apply skincare products with soothing effects such as centella asiatica, aloe vera or mugwort.
- As always, stay healthy by drinking enough water and eating food rich in antioxidants which will not only boost your immune, but also help protect against cell damaged caused by free-radicals
